‘it’s just a little prick’. this was the most memorable one that made me wish I was a more capable sewer in need of a pin cushion. they also sell girlie bits, bacon bits and zombies on their website or etsy.

allow me to introduce uh… myself. i’m iris, i’ve been writing on nopostagerequired for about a year and a half now. i’m currently living in DC – trying to work in reproductive health and immigration, or quitting all that to bartend, trying to meet new people but not get my heart broken, and trying to find my place in the city while also looking to leave it. right now, life seems to be one extreme or the other.

UPDATE: Missing 12 year old girl FOUND

August 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

just got word that Tatjana has been found (ALERT: Missing 12 Year Old Girl in Columbia Heights).  i’m happy to hear that she is safe and back with her family. one listservtatjiana5 email writes: ”Thank you for you support and prayers and willingness to spring into action working with limited info… I know this has been a trying time for her family. If there are any more developments I’ll be sure to pass them along.”

when i first posted the missing alert, i tried to look for more sources other than emails and neighborhood blogs for more information. but multiple searches in the Washington Post or other news sources came up empty. and even now that emails say Tatjana has been found, there are no details about what happened, or where she was found. its scary to think that so many go missing each day, it no longer warrants a news story, not even a mention on the side column.

Zoey: Lost and Found

Washington Post: Search Underway for Missing Police Dog Zoey, followed by Missing Pr. George’s Police Dog Zoey Is Found

reasoning:

Aww Zoey! yeah it’s ironic that zoey was a search & rescue dog, and when she slipped out of her collar and ran away, Prince George police had to conduct their veryzoey own “search and rescue” for her. if alanis morrisette’s “ironic” really had lyrics with such straight irony, zoey’s story would make for a good line. i wonder what she was doing those 6 days she was ‘on the run’ -  working on her continued escape plan, foraging for berries and small squirrels to eat? perhaps she was ‘missing’ for so long b/c she is a search & rescue dog, so she knows how not to be found. maybe she felt trapped and did not want to escape from the police life -> where is PETA when you need them to take on a good kidnapping case?  or perhaps Zoey wasn’t thinking any of this at all b/c she’s just a dog, a wild animal. my friend AHH once had her beloved dog, Razor, slip out of his collar and run away, she recounts the time as being absolutely scary. luckily and happily, Razor and Zoey are back safe. onward to more days of sniffing and running around.

this show is going to be amazing. afterparty for serious heavy hitters only – it’ll involve a rooftop and the sun coming up.QQZQDd80yold0m5vdODfxJCyo1_r1_500

The Dance Party
www.myspace.com/thedanceparty
“If you’ve never heard the Prince George’s County power pop quintet the Dance Party, you should know they didn’t pick their name to be ironic. They really do want people to dance and party, as evidenced by their wild shows… In other cities, such a hedonistic musical approach might seem passe, but in the earnest D.C. scene, their rowdiness has made them stand out.”
- Washington Post Express

Ra Ra Rasputin
www.myspace.com/rararawks
“Local favorites Ra Ra Rasputin give the best of both worlds, a live act that reliably can get asses not only in the door, but shaking on the floor with their infectious dance punk.”
- DCist.com

Tigercity
www.myspace.com/tigercity
“With echoes of the Bee Gees, Prince and Roxy Music, Tigercity’s funky, electro-driven indie-pop was born of a desire to avoid what [lead singer] Bill Gillim calls the ’scratchy post-punk guitar sound’ New York bands have been milking for the past few years. The group’s earliest tracks relied heavily on synthesizers and computerized beats, but their move to New York brought the addition of drummer Aynsley Powell and guitarist Andrew Brady, and with them a progressively refined combination of New Wave’s mechanized sheen and funk’s organic grooves.”
- Rolling Stone

Casper Bangs
www.myspace.com/casperbangs
“Rob Pierangeli, formerly of local indie-pop standouts the Hard Tomorrows, is back with a new project, and thankfully, the same knack for hooks.”
- The Washington Post

more about “Prince Of Petworth » Blog Archive …“, posted with vodpod

reasoning:

this is where i live in DC.  right across the intersection is Big Bear Cafe, it has all the makings of the perfect coffeeshop – its service is often questionable – but french press coffee,  and comfortable wooden tables. it’s a generally sweet place when it’s not too crowded.  the farmer’s market is opening in May right in front of the cafe – yeah, i live right across the street from this. sometimes it’s almost too cool. the beautiful ledroit park mural was just completed in the fall, i helped set up the scaffolding for Garin and Bryan. it’s really an incredible piece. i can also vouch for Thai X-ing, deliciously spicy curries at a decent price.

honestly, Bloomingdale was a rough neighborhood to move into, especially when you’re coming in from the suburbs of PA. but i’ve gotten to know many of the people who live on my street, they call me “the bike girl”, its super convenient to downtown and other chill neighborhoods.  there’s no stuffiness or pretention – it’s still a mixed area of families, elderly, and young artists/musicians. and there are some really sweet looking rowhomes. please come visit, the places featured in this video are only a little part of all the other cool stuff Bloomingdale has.

DC9 business card, along with Daytrotter Tigercity: Damn Right There Are Claws – Dancing Claws article

reasoning:

i was bummed all week over a stupid boy, lack of money, and lack of job issues, but DDW had come into town, and when he suggested a tex-mex for dinner, i knew things would be good. we started off happy hour at Solly’s and then DC9 – a place i’ve taken a fierce liking to lately – dancetigercity parties, good bar food, chill lighting & decor, schlitz in a can, plus lots of open bars offering Sparks or redbull vodkas. while we were sitting drinking our Magic Hat #9s, Tigercity’s van pulled up around 6 and they started unloading their equipment. whee! so excited, but of course i just played it cool drinking my beer and talking to the 2 guys at the bar who were going to the 9:30 club for jimmy eat world. J.E.W. makes me happily reminisce about jr high, but this night – these guys were paying much more money to go to the wrong place to see the wrong band.

poor but sexy started off the night, local DC band with a keyboard, synthesizer and adorable lead singer who robot dances across the stage. i was standing next to the stairs to the left of the stage, and tigercity had a booth right behind me, so everytime one of the band members needed to get back to their seat, they had to walk by me. i was definitely the short little asian girl standing in the way, but i was also the one who ‘accidentally’ got to bump into each of them. yes, tigercity makes me a little giddy groupie, are they that big of rockstars yet? they are in my heart.  you can probably tell that the rest of this show review isn’t going to turn critical, or disgruntled, the tigercity lovefest is going to continue.
