Mariah Carey Ft. Jay-Z: Heartbreaker video

reasoning:

just rediscovered the videos from Mariah Carey’s Rainbow and Butterfly albums. this Heartbreaker video seems to be ahead of its time – so many elements are tricks they pull today and it still seems fun and innovative.  the animation in here is adorable, and i like that Carey incorporates a fun sense of humor into her videos – the ex-boyfriend being attacked by popcorn and unable to gain Bianca’s attention, and the movie theatre girls’ bathroom catfight are shot in a similar whimsical fashion to one of her more recent videos: Touch my Body. ah i love Mariah Carey, her stuff will always be good, i equate it to a michael jackson effect. put on thriller at any party and people love it. and genuinely so, not just for its possible kitsch or nostalgia factor but because it’s good.

UNITE HERE!’s 2009 Triangle Fire Commemoration

reasoning:

Friday, March 27, 2009 at 12PM

Corner of Washington Place & Greene Street, NYC

- East of Washington Square Park

For more information about the commemoration, please contact Ed
Vargas at evargas@unitehere.org or 212-265-7000painting2

not entirely sure how this commemoration is going to go, i think it’ll be more of a rally/remembrance of the workers who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in 1911 and all the other American workers who have lost their lives due to dangerous and unsafe workplaces since. in UNITE HERE!’s email, they include a link to this youtube video of Cintas worker Eleazar Torres-Gomez who was killed on the job because his non-union workplace lacked proper safety precautions.  certainly accidents happen, but some accidents can also be avoided. its tragic these incidents still occur in the US, even with all the regulations, OSHA, and work of the labor movement. certainly if you are in the military, or part of a security force like the police or firefighters – your life and the possibility of dying is part of the job description. do i really need to preface any of my writings as being idealistic, anymore? i just think we’ve gotten along far enough that you shouldn’t be concerned for your life when you go to work.

BBC News/UK/Free art on Mexico City metro

more about “BBC NEWS | UK | Free art on Mexico Ci…“, posted with vodpod

reasoning:

one thing missing in DC’s city life is street art – musicians, performers, or physical pieces. someone told me it’s because getting a permit to perform is fairly difficult. DC has a reputation for being cold and dreary, a place just full of suits and Hill staffers, i know it makes me happy to hear an urhu playing as i’m exiting out of the metro.

with this mexico city example, why isn’t there something similar in DC? there isn’t the performance space? billboards generate ad revenue, leaving no area to post artists’ works? the book exchange is particularly interesting to me. the DC SmartBike program is slowly catching on, but it still has many skeptics. the logistics of a book program would seem even more complicated. but it’s been done! and according to this video – works well.

its sad to hear the reporter say that for some Mexicans, this is their only ‘exposure’ to ‘culture’ they can afford. if anything, perhaps they are already more ‘cultured’ because they have realized the importance of and made such art available to the general public.

Yes We Cran

‘Yes We Cran’

mixed by Marcus of the Hilton Garden Inn- Downtown Atlanta

- vodka

- cranberry juice

- splash of pineapple

add ice. suck the goodness down

reasoning:

tonight, at the opening reception for the annual meeting of the Abortion CareNetwork, Marcus (our bartender) put his own spin on the vodka cranberries so many of the women were ordering. it’s a simple spin -> splash of pineappleriga-0672juice/ but it got rave reviews for not being too tropically sweet, but tasty enough that you cannot taste the alcohol. people in this reception (many OB/GYNs, medical clinic staff) joked that because having cranberry juice is an additional health benefit, that’s an excuse to drink more. however, they did not have a name for this drink that was basically just vodka-cran+pineapple. what did they come up with? yes we Cran, because Obama’s slogan has been catching on, and ‘yes we can’ also works for the reproductive justice movement. either way, invented by a hotel bartender named marcus and second-wave feminists who run abortion clinics who aren’t entirely sure of all the facebook capabilities, but have have heard of twitter – here’s a drink that’s so girly delicious, you can’t taste the alcohol but it’s not over the top sweet, either.

BBC article: US bikini wax plans ditched

reasoning:

yeow, something i haven’t fully gotten behind yet, but also something that shouldn’t be banned, just better regulated so people aren’t getting hurt – especially in that area. it seems that new jersey has more of a history to ban things quicker, than going through the more arduous process of setting up and enforcing better regulations (ex: only full-service gas stations). this quote is great: Spa owner Linda Orsuto told the Associated Press news agency: “In New Jersey especially, where the government has been picking our pockets for so long, it was like: ‘Just stay out of our pants, will you?’”

Smith’s Annual Spring Bulb Show to Open with Lecture on the Tulip by Anna Pavord

reasoning:

(having trouble posting video. watch it here.)

my favorite part about Spring at Smith. I know i’m an East Coast girl, i like havingbulbshow20084 4 seasons – but every year, the winter seems longer, and the ground seems to be blanketed in the brown slush for far too many weeks. the bulb show always comes at the perfect time b/c it’s near midterms and it’s been constantly dark and gross outside. daffodils and tulips may seem like just ordinary Home Depot single flowers, but arranged at staggered levels, colors and sizes – the sight and smell is breathtaking. The Botanic Garden does an incredible job every year,  they should have a live webcam up soon. even just to see the flowers through video is inspiring and rejuvenating – spring is soo close, i can feel it. my eczema and allergies are starting to act up. The 2009 Bulb Show opened on March 7, Little Bang Theory has posted stunning shots here.

Musicthatmakesyoudumb graph by Virgil Griffithmusicthatmakesyoudum2bla1

reasoning:

coming back from taking the GREs earlier this afternoon, i wonder if i can blame my low score on my musical tastes.  if you matched my itunes library to this chart, i should have gotten somewhere along the 1076  - 1236 range. ugh to the beethoven listeners scoring around a 1300. typical. perhaps the classical music nerd stereotype does hold true. though i also wouldn’t put too much weight on the graph finding that country music listeners usually scored lower, and hip-hop or r&b listeners even lower. if anything, those listening to Queen, Outkast and Lil’ Wayne should be to the right in Beethoven area because they are all genius!

maybe not be the deepest, but it sounds the sweetest and sometimes being the most direct and obvious is more profound. while there’s an ongoing “sister fair” or “sister there” debate (it’s “sister fair”), according to youtube, this song has helped to progress many crushes into relationships. aww, the days of mixed tapes to signify the beginning of a young love.
