my obsession since March when i happened upon their album on the New Releases shelf in WOZQ… is there a stronger word than obsession? ever since playing “weekend wars” on our ‘Tea Party w/ DJ Raw Sugar & DJ Burnt Honey’, i’ve had MGMT on rotation non-stop. their album has already hit 30+ plays on my iTunes, i should open a myspace account considering how many times i’ve visited their page, i’ve read every album and concert review of them posted on the web, and seen practically all the interview clips on youtube. i have fallen for andrew and ben hard. is this how girls felt when the beatles first came to america, or the rolling stones appeared on the Ed Sullivan show? i’ve had musical obsessions and phases before, probably once every year, but i can’t recall the last time i was so smitten. they are beautiful, emit real deal hipster coolness, and they are total rockstars (liberal arts graduates (wesleyan) now opening for radiohead – WHA?!)
with all their buzz and quick rise to fame, they seem to have 2 effects on people: complete adoration, or completely unimpressed. i’m in the first category.
to the man of Rittenhouse Square (one of my favorite places in the city b/c it attracts all sorts of people: business, blue collar, hipster, canvassers, homeless, old & married, young & with kids) David Rittenhouse was an astronomer, clock maker, and land surveyor. he was also the first director of the US Mint. he built one of the first telescopes in the US, and traced the path of Venus across the sun. Ray King is a Philadelphia-based installation artist whose primary medium is light, and manipulates it into a sort-of holographic image. he was buying material from a supplier one day and learned that David Rittenhouse was also interested in light diffraction into a color spectrum. while King created work on university buildings and airports, this one is right in Philadelphia, on the side of his studio building, facing south as a gateway introduction to the neighborhood and in tribute to the man. I love the name of the installation – that both men are in conversation with each other, exploring their curiosity of light, one for art, the other for science. but with the telescope, and this installation of Hello David, who’s to say they are not one in the same, highly interchangeable, or at least complementary projects. i have not yet seen it in person, but from this video and the images on King’s page, it looks breathtaking, like a lightshower or mirrors inside a telescope magnified by X100000.
better than setting up a bonfire in the woods by yourself and throwing all of the stuff he gave you that was “cute” into it. here at Ex-Boyfriend Jewelry: “You don’t want it, he can’t have it back”, you can sell the jewelry given to you from previous relationships and tell the stories or reasons of why you are no longer together. unlike the pawn or consignment shops, the website does not take a big chunk of the profit for itself. Ex-Boyfriend Jewelry is almost like a support group for the broken-hearted. it’s almost comforting to know you aren’t the only person who has been cheated on recently, though it may feel like it. mostly geared towards women in heterosexual relationships, there is a section where men can sell jewelry remnants of old loves, as well.
these Tiffany Elsa Peretti Open Heart earrings for $150 seem particularly covetous. it also comes in a pretty Tiffany teal envelope! why is she selling? “he pretty much promised me the world and didn’t come through for me. But now I have a fantastic new boyfriend… So, I’m selling the old jewelry to make room for the new jewelry!”Other memorable lines: “he was lazy, cheap, and a piece of crap, obviously he must go”, “same old same old”, “all my exes have been idiots”, “need to pay the bills…”
the section on engagement rings is particularly heartbreaking.
there’s an episode of sex and the city where all of carrie’s love relationships are going wrong, but one thing she can depend on for company is New York City, her constant boyfriend. while the dry cleaners are never open, there are movie theaters, museums, beautiful parks, and cheap but delicious food to take part in. by yourself. you definitely have to be in a comfortable and confident mood to take on seemingly social activities alone, but when all the components are there, it’s a wonderful, warm and fuzzy feeling. i like the anonymity of cities, but also if you seek out the cultural opportunities, and talk to random strangers, the city can embrace you, like an old friend. it can also screw you over royally in so many ways, but i had a good day today, so let’s stick with the warm and fuzzy.
i made a new friend in AG today, she’s the friend of Lost with Eve’s older sister and works at The Campus Kitchen Project. she bought me lunch at Taqueria Nacionale, one of the local joints right by the Capitol and Union Station. simple, cheap, and tasty. small corn tortillas, topped with either beans, chicken or steak, a bit of cilantro, add some spicy tomatillo green sauce and it’s scrumptious delicious. their fish tacos and yucca fries are awesome. we sat on the grass underneath a tree, and AG told me about her past job experiences, and gave me recommendations on job search books. i saw martha raddatz at starbucks on connecticut street by farragut square. she’s the ABCnews Chief White House Correspondent. it was my first Washington DC celebrity sighting. moving to the city is going to be great because i am such a closeted (ok, maybe not so much anymore) political junkie. as opposed to the times when i met kato kaelin, or heard that mel gibson was in my high school town filming “signs”, meeting barack obama and john edwards made me completely giddy.
martha was in a deep conversation with someone so i didn’t want to interrupt-but it was almost surreal to see this woman, that I’ve watched speak every night to Charlie Gibson, on WorldNews Tonight, about the latest White House news, sit at this small table right by the bathroom with a Starbucks paper cup in hand.
i love the comments to this Crooks and Liars post – while martha raddatz does keep pushing, it’s surprising how rude george bush is. he must know that his reaction is going to reach the public, he’s talking to the press (!). apparently once during a different press conference, her cellphone went off – her ringtone: chamillionaire – ridin’. martha raddatz is so cool.
i just got my 3rd and last shot of Gardasil. i am now protected against certain types of HPV, particularly the strains that have been shown to cause cervical cancer. woo. i didn’t actively seek out the vaccine, it was one i had definitely heard of, these “one less” commercials are on constant play if you turn on the TV, but it was something i didn’t think i needed. and while vaccines have done a lot of good, i’m wary that soonwe’ll be vaccinating ourselves against everything in the world, and simply start a new series of bacteria, germs and illnesses. i went in to get a physical in january, and my doctor immediately advised that i should start on the gardasil track. i knew that SL had done it and she said it was painful and expensive. but dr. madden assured me that it was now covered by insurance – it was a huge fight that doctors took on against the insurance companies, “how can you deny people something that could potentially save their lives?” i was still a bit hesitant, but the doctor was insistent. i was also somewhat convinced when she said, “how amazing is it that we’ve developed a vaccine against a cancer? think about the implications that soon we’ll have something for every cancer, and no one will have to suffer.” unfortunately, the first shot hurt like hell, and committed me for 6 months to this new health and scientific experiment that i wasn’t necessarily ready for or on board with. video about the Alive Gallery in Seoul, South Korea hologram art exhibit.
reasoning:
my first reaction to this video was that somehow by making these most famous works of art into talking holograms, it would be cheapening their importance, their value, commercializing them further to the point of kitsch, and that this would be something the hoity-toity, and exclusive art world would frown upon in disgust. there’s “art” and then there’s art, i guess. but the more i watch this video, the cooler it seems. i’m all about expanding, and broadening the limited, esoteric, and restricted to a greater audience, to make things more accessible, and have people add their experiences, or their opinions and have the walls between the elite and the “common” broken down. that’s why i love blogs, youtube, banksy, and this exhibit, the pros of user-generated content far outweight the cons of people being general assholes b/c of internet anonymity. plus, how cool is it that mona lisa and michelangelo speak in korean?
